With a musical background influenced equally by John Williams and Trent Reznor, as well as membership in two punk-rock marching bands (Chicago’s Mucca Pazza and LA’s “Killsonic”), Greg’s always had a passion for using music in unexpected ways.
Greg Nicolett's career began with live-action indie features, but a fortuitous collaboration with Shia LaBeouf led to scoring Disney's animated series Goldie and Bear. He has since composed scores for several Disney projects including T.O.T.S., Puppy Dog Pals, and Pupstruction. His work at Disney caught the attention of Voracious Games, who were looking for a Pixar aesthetic for their debut title, Potionomics. Greg recorded over 80 orchestral musicians and soloists, earning nominations from the Hollywood Music in Media Awards, the Game Audio Network Guild, and the World Soundtrack Awards. Current animated projects include the series Talon, produced by Cartoon Network's Brian C. Miller and Jennifer Pelphrey, and an upcoming Dr. Seuss animated special for Netflix.
Greg’s work in live action spans horror to comedy, from features to short films, and tends to lean more experimental in approach. His recent short film, the WW2 drama Enemy No More, centers around minimalist solo cello and violin performances and won 5 best score awards during its festival run. In Tom Stern’s Adams found-percussion and free-jazz collide with traditional orchestration to support Patton Oswalt's descent into madness. For Rachel Goldberg’s Neighbors, Greg uses violin plucks, guitar and synthesizers to get inside the head of lead actress Kelli Garner as her character vacillates between anxiety and wonder. His score for the sci-fi short, Re / Collection uses dialogue from the actors themselves (slowed by 500%) as part of its musical palette. Greg's concert work Forbidden To Face the Natural Light combines symphonic brass, percussion and audio from This American Life to tell the story of Guantanamo detainees who still, to this day, remain out of reach of the US legal system.
Originally from New England, Greg's musical education included an apprenticeship with composer Brian Keane (The Chieftains). While living in New York, Greg worked as assistant producer at Motherwest Studios with indie bands such as The Magnetic Fields. He’s one of the last students of Disney legend Buddy Baker (The Fox And The Hound) and holds a Bachelor of Music in Composition and Music Production from the University Of Michigan.
